The Magritte Bar at The Beaumont Hotel London

The Beaumont Hotel is a magnificent art deco edifice tucked away on the northern extremes of Mayfair.

It had an unlikely start in life; built in 1925, it was possibly the most beautiful car park ever built. Almost a century later it has become one of London’s most stylish hotels. The new owner asked Nina to wave her wand over the bar which, she says, was ‘brown and depressing. It was full of booths and had no element of softness.’ Nina, the master of injecting comfort into a room, set to work. Long benches were upholstered in leather that she replaced with stamped velvet. Immediately, the space took on a much more inviting feel. The Hong Kong-born designer Arnold Chan was commissioned to create a beautifully layered lighting scheme that highlights the beautiful bar, as well as the collection of artwork that Nina displayed around the room; artwork includes paintings by Van Dongen, a ceramic piece by Picasso, paintings by artists from the Scottish school and a piece after which the bar is named – a painting by Magritte. Nina also commissioned a collection of playful ceramics from the designer Luke Edward Hall that he decorated with a cocktail theme. The result is a wonderfully eclectic feel that immediately makes guests feel at their ease – ‘since we transformed the space, the takings have shot up,’ says Nina.
